The 9th Annual Asian Academic Accounting Association (AAAA) conference on Towards Global Financial Reporting Standards was recently held in Dubai. The conference called for greater collaboration among business schools to meet the challenges presented by a globalised world. The conference, hosted by the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD), was attended by 120 delegates, mostly academics from 25 countries from Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia and North America. In his welcome address, President UOWD- Professor Rob Whelan, underlined the importance of academic gatherings to facilitate exchange of ideas, networking and joint research.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Shahrokh M. Saudagaran, Dean, Milgard School of Business, University of Washington Tacoma and Secretary General of AAAA, said it was critical for business schools to update the curricula in business schools to keep track of the changing business environment. He said the internationalization of university learning had triggered mobility of academics and students from one part of the world to another, thus enriching the knowledge process and the learning experience of all involved. The business schools should, therefore, support the process and benefit from the internationalization of business learning. Simon Williams, Chief Economist, Middle East, HSBC, speaking at the conference dinner, said the current global economic crisis was far more serious than the one in 1929. He said while the Great Depression was largely confined to the United States, the current crisis was engulfing the whole globe, and therefore posed bigger challenges to policy makers and requires international coordination.

Dr. Munir Lutfi, Director, Centre for Management Excellence, UOWD, who was co-chair of the conference, was voted as President-Elect of AAAA. A total of 95 papers were presented during 35 concurrent sessions at the two-day conference. The topics covered included financial reporting, management accounting, auditing, international accounting, ethics, accounting education, earnings management, business strategy, corporate governance, financial analysis, corporate social responsibility and Islamic banking. The delegates came from the UAE, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Iran, India, Jordan, Sweden, Germany, UK, USA, Singapore, Philippines, China, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Macedonia, Italy, Turkey, Japan, Tunisia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Nigeria. It was announced that the next AAAA conference will be held in Turkey on November 15, 2009.
